Plasmapause Extraction

The plasmasphere is a donut-shaped region inside the Earth's magnetosphere. It consists of cold and dense plasma particles. The outer boundary of the plasmasphere is called the plasmapause. Due to the magnetic field properties, a 3D plasmapause can be considered to be a collection of magnetic field lines passing through the equatorial plasmapause. The Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) sensor on board the NASA IMAGE satellite provided global images of the plasmasphere. In our research work, we have developed and analyzed algorithms that determine the equatorial plasmapause from a single EUV image of plasmasphere by exploiting the magnetic field property. Here are some images from our work in that area.
