Programs

All Computer Science degree programs offer substantial exposure and experience with software engineering topics. Because of our outstanding faculty, students pursuing graduate degrees (both M.S. and Ph.D.) have the opportunity to do projects, theses and dissertations in topics related to software engineering. Students wanting a more intense focus on software engineering are encouraged to enroll in the Master of Science in Software Engineering (MSSE) In addition, we offer a Software Engineering Certificate for students wanting in-depth study of software engineering.

Software Engineering Certificate

The Software Engineering Program is designed for those students who want to broaden their knowledge in this area, but do not necessarily desire to pursue a graduate degree in computer science. The certificate requires 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in software engineering, which must include CS 650 and five courses selected from the following courses: CS 551, 552, 553,  652, 655, 656, 658, 666, or 668. Students desiring to complete the certificate program should have either industrial experience in software development or have undergraduate courses in software development.

The certificate does not have to be part of a degree program in Computer Science.You may complete it before your degree is finished, or add courses after your degree is awarded, or just take the courses without being in a degree program at all; however, students pursuing an MSSE degree are not eligible for the Software Engineering Certificate.

Distance Learning

Some of the courses in the software engineering programs may be offered as distance learning courses through the UAH Distance Learning Office. These courses give students the opportunity to check out videotapes of the lectures or receiving on-demand streaming video of the session over the Internet, with the option of attending the "live" class.
